The title of this blog post says it all. When I first started playing disc golf, it was to get outside with friends, have a fun challenge, while having a beer and loving life. When people think about exercise, they often picture gyms, treadmills, or intense workout routines. But one of the most enjoyable and underrated ways to stay active is disc golf. This fast-growing outdoor sport combines movement, fresh air, and fun in a way that doesn’t feel like a workout, yet delivers real physical and mental benefits (especially if you have a beer...or 2)
A Full-Body Workout (Without the Gym Vibes)
Disc golf works your entire body in subtle but effective ways. Every throw engages your core, shoulders, arms, hips, and legs, especially when using proper form. Over the course of a round, your body performs hundreds of controlled movements that build strength, balance, and coordination.
Unlike repetitive gym exercises, disc golf keeps your body guessing with different lies, stances, and throwing styles—making it both functional and dynamic.
Walking That Doesn’t Feel Like Exercise
Most disc golf courses range from 1.5 to 4 miles per round, often across hills, wooded terrain, and uneven ground. That means you’re getting a great workout just by being out there and having fun.
Fresh Air, Sunshine, and Nature
Disc golf courses are typically located in parks, forests, and open spaces, offering a natural escape from screens and indoor routines. Spending time outdoors has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and boost mental clarity.
Its pretty zen.
Low Impact, High Reward
One of the best things about disc golf is that it’s low impact and accessible to almost all ages and fitness levels. My son started playing at age 5.
At the same time, players can increase intensity by:
-
Playing longer courses
-
Carrying their bag instead of using a cart
-
Focusing on powerful, technical throws
-
Playing multiple rounds
Hanging w Friends / Free
Staying active is easier when it’s enjoyable and social. Disc golf is:
-
Free at most courses. And discs are very affordable....like really affordable
-
Easy to play solo or with friends
-
All levels can play and have a great time
-
Competitive or casual
Disc on!
